Description Summary: Must have knowledge of special needs and limitations of elderly; methods and techniques used to include residents and involve them in activities; alert to attitudes and feelings of residents; knowledge of familiarity with handicrafts, skills, games and other activities, familiarity with the community, social agencies, contacts with clubs and groups and knowledge of sources of materials and local services; understanding and self-discipline to relate to sensitively to residents needs and feelings.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Organize programs for groups and individual activities based on residents’ individualized needs as identified in resident’s health care plans. Maintains a balance of recreational activities including physical, social religious, intellectual, and creative arts and crafts. Ensure group activities are scheduled to provide for maximum involvement by interested residents.
- Interview resident and family on admission in a private setting to obtain information concerning the resident’s background to better provide activities to meet their needs. Assess spiritual needs and facilitate participation in religious activities. Involve the resident/family in planning activities when possible.
- Plan and implement at least two (2) organized group activities daily – Monday through Friday, and at least one (1) organized group activity on Saturday and Sunday, provided or coordinated by staff. Plan, schedule, and implement room visits and in-room activities for residents unable to leave their room.
- Provide reading material in Braille, tapes, and records for blind residents.
- Have a good and rewarding exercise program. Schedule movies, plan parties, provide games. Encourage hobbies and crafts.
- Prepare and post monthly activity calendars indicating scheduled activities and times. Compile and maintain an activity schedule. Maintain activity supplies, equipment to meet needs and interest of residents. Prepare monthly bulletin board. Be responsible for getting residents into area where activities will occur.
- Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and positive emphasis as well as a calm environment throughout the department. Coordinate activities with other departments as necessary.
- Record resident activity participation in resident’s individual medical record and on activity sheet. Keep group records of participation on scheduled activities. Work with the facility’s consultants as necessary and implement recommended changes as required.
- Recruit, orient and supervise volunteer program and maintain records of volunteer programs and communicate facility’s volunteer needs to the community. Develop and maintain a good working rapport with all departments and medical professional, volunteers, to assure that activity program can be property maintained to meet the needs of the residents. Be an active member of the interdisciplinary team and attend all resident care plan meetings.
- Maintain confidentiality of all pertinent resident care information to assure resident’s rights are protected. Assume responsibility and accountability of the activity director.
- Accept other assignments as directed by the Administrator in a cooperative manner.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School or GED preferred. Must have either a certificate of Social Service/Activities Training approved by the State of Oklahoma for nursing homes or be able to successfully complete training required. Must be able to read, write and speak the English language, able to make independent decisions when circumstances warrants such actions, willingness to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors and the general public and have some understanding of the social psychological and recreational needs of the aged. Must be able to pass OSBI background check and pre-employment drug screening.
SALARY: Commensurate with Education and work experience.
